At the end of a tenancy the tenant can transfer the bond to a new tenancy rather than getting a refund.
To transfer a bond to a new property, the tenant needs to complete and sign a bond transfer form. It must also be signed by both the old and new landlords. The new landlord then sends this form to Tenancy Services.
The new landlord does not have to accept a bond transfer.
If you use the Landlord ID number, no other information is required in the landlord details column. You can find a Landlord ID number by calling 0800 737 666.
Bond transfers take up to 15 working days to process.
Send the form to us using one of the following methods:
- Scan and email to email@example.com
- Post to Tenancy Services, PO Box 50445, Porirua 5240
If the new bond is a different amount
If the old bond amount is more than the new bond, the tenant and landlord must both complete the refund section on the bond transfer form.
If the new bond amount is more than the old bond, the tenant gives the new landlord the extra money. The new landlord then sends the bond transfer form and a cheque for the extra money to Tenancy Services within 23 working days of receiving it.
Change of tenant
If a tenant changes during the tenancy, you will need to change the name on the bond record. This is different to transferring the bond to a new property.
